Snow Day Diaries: A Peek Behind the Barn Doors at Our Local Flower Farm

Hi and Happy Snow Day from Central Maryland, home to our thriving local flower farm!

This week, we received nearly a foot of snow during one of the biggest winter storms in years.

While everything’s blanketed in snow, life on a local flower farm is far from quiet. There’s always something to do to prepare for a successful growing season. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what snow days are like on our local flower farm:

1. Brushing off Tunnels and Greenhouses

The first task of the day is clearing snow from our low tunnels and pop-up greenhouses to protect them from collapsing under the weight. This simple yet essential job keeps our fall-sown seedlings—nurtured on our local flower farm—safe and growing steadily, even during the coldest days.

Did you know that many local flower farms take down their tunnels before heavy snowstorms? It reduces maintenance and allows snow to act as an insulating blanket for uncovered plants, protecting them from extreme temperatures.

2. Indoor Seed Starting

Snow days are perfect for starting seeds indoors. At our local flower farm, I prepare by checking my grow rack, blending my HOMEMADE SEED STARTING MIX, and filling seed trays with the first seeds of the season. This year, we’re kicking things off with Lovely Lisianthus, a favorite among our farm’s blooms!

3. Cleaning and Organizing

Winter gives us time to tackle some much-needed organization on the farm. I clean tools, sort supplies, and reorganize the shed and basement to ensure everything is ready when the weather warms up. Starting the season on a well-organized local flower farm sets the stage for smoother operations and a beautiful harvest.

4. Planning the Season Ahead

With the fields covered in snow, I finally have time to sit down with a hot cup of coffee and focus on planning. Crop schedules, bouquet recipes, and last year’s notes come together as I map out the future of our local flower farm. It’s exciting to dream about the flowers we’ll grow and share with our community come springtime!

Even during the quiet of winter, life on a local flower farm never stops. From snowy greenhouse care to planning a vibrant new season, there’s always something to look forward to.

Stay cozy and support your local flower farm this spring!
